Introduction to Backcountry

Powder in the Backcountry

Backcountry Skiing

There is a place where crowds do not exist, where the masses don’t go, where the snow is deep, light and fluffy, and where there are open powder bowls and widely spaced trees. We are going to take you to this mystical place and you are not going to pay thousands of dollars for a helicopter.

Trip Description

Join us on a one of a kind tour which combines great skiing with great learning. This tour is for those with limited or no backcountry experience who would like to learn more about the backcountry and have some great skiing. Over the week we will teach you all of the basics from trip planning to avalanche safety to emergency winter shelters.

As all of our week long tours we start this one in Calgary, Alberta. From there we go into Kananaskis County 1 hour west of Calgary for a day at Black Prince Ski area, a local favourite. We spend the second night in Canmore. Depending on snow conditions we then ski the next day at either Bow Summit or back into Kananaskis country. We then head to the skiing hotspot of Golden, BC where we base ourselves for the following four days. We explore the amazing terrain and skiing in the backcountry bowls adjacent to Kicking Horse Resort. Depending on avalanche and weather conditions we may also go deep into the heart of the Selkirk mountains and ski tour at the world famous Roger’s Pass. All participants on this tour receive their recreational avalanche course certification.

In Calgary and Canmore we stay in extremely comfortable places complete with a spa. In Golden to reward ourselves after a long day we stay in gorgeously comfortable B&B’s which always have a hot tub and delightful hosts.

Disclaimer: Due to varying avalanche and weather conditions we are not able to guarantee the amount of time spent in the backcountry. Safety is our number one priority at Canadian Powder Skiing Adventures. Having said that trips are booked at the optimal time of year for backcountry adventure, and the chances are if we cannot go into the backcountry because of unstable snow conditions the skiing inside the resort boundaries is fantastic. The itinerary is subject to slight changes due to weather and backcountry conditions.
